7 Days in Vietnam
Choose one region: this week combines Hanoi, Ninh Binh and the coast instead of pretending north and south fit comfortably.
Last updated . Opening days, entry rules, fares and road conditions can change. Recheck the official sources linked below before travel.
One week in Vietnam needs a regional decision before it needs a list of attractions. This route chooses the north, keeps the overnights to Hanoi and Ninh Binh plus one planned coastal stay, and avoids spending the week in airports.
Can you see Vietnam in seven days?
7 days can cover 1 Vietnamese region with 2 or 3 bases, but they cannot cover Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City comfortably as one first trip.
Use this northern route as a complete trip. Choose the south instead if the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City matter more.

Day 1: Hanoi arrival
Keep the first day inside the Old Quarter and let street rhythm, food and the lake establish the city.
Afternoon and evening
Hoàn Kiếm Lakeabout an hour
Use the lake as an orientation loop and a calm place to absorb the first traffic crossings.
Hanoi Old Quarterevening
Choose a few streets and one meal rather than following every named food stop from a list.
Day 2: Hanoi history and food
Give the morning to one historic complex, then return to street level for the afternoon.
- On foot
- About 6 km with short taxi options
Full day
Temple of Literatureabout 90 minutes
The courtyards explain an older intellectual Hanoi without requiring a sprawling museum visit.
Trúc Bạchafternoon and evening
Walk or ride north for a lakeside meal and a quieter evening away from the Old Quarter's densest streets.
Day 3: Hanoi to Ninh Binh
Move south in the morning, leave luggage and use the afternoon for a short local ride rather than a full excursion.
Transfer and afternoon
Hanoimorningbook ahead
Choose the operator and pickup point before the day, then protect time for normal traffic variation.
Tam Cốcafternoon
Use the arrival afternoon for village roads or rest, saving the boat route for a complete morning.
Day 4: Trang An and Hoa Lu
Take the boat route early, then add one historic stop rather than racing between every viewpoint.
- Book before you go
- Confirm the current boat pier and route
Full day
Trang Anabout 3 hoursbook ahead
An early boat reduces heat and queue uncertainty. Route operations can change, so confirm at the official or local visitor source.
Hoa Luabout 90 minutes
Pair one historic site with the boat landscape and leave the highest viewpoint optional in hot or wet weather.
Day 5: Ninh Binh to the coast
Make this the second transfer day and choose a verified boat or island itinerary before leaving Ninh Binh.
- Book before you go
- Coastal transport and overnight boat or hotel
Transfer
Ninh Binhmorning
Leave early enough that the road transfer does not consume the evening check in window.
Ha Long areaafternoonbook ahead
Use only a licensed, currently operating provider and confirm the exact port in writing.
Day 6: The coast
Keep the day with the booked coastal route and resist adding a separate transfer before it finishes.
Full day
Ha Long Bayfull day
Weather and port instructions determine the day. Follow the operator and local authority guidance rather than a fixed online timetable.
Overnight baseevening
Stay where the confirmed route ends so the evening does not begin with another uncertain road journey.
Day 7: Return to Hanoi
Return with a large buffer and keep the final city hours close to the onward departure point.
Return and departure
Hanoiafternoon
Treat the road time as variable and do not book a tight international connection after an unbuffered transfer.
Hoàn Kiếm districtfinal hours
If time remains, revisit one café or shop instead of beginning another cross city itinerary.
What is worth the time, and what is not
Worth your time
- A northern regional route. It creates distinct Hanoi, landscape and coast days without an internal flight.
- Two honest transfer days. They protect the experiences on the days around them.
Skip it
- Ho Chi Minh City in the same week. The flight and airport process turn the route into a national sampler rather than a trip.
- Every Ninh Binh viewpoint. Heat, steps and boat time make a smaller selection more realistic.
Why this route works
The route chooses depth in one region and acknowledges two road transfer days. That choice is the main value of the plan, because adding the south would remove more than it contributes.

Why this page exists. Vietnam is the only country route here whose long north to south shape makes a one week national highlights circuit an explicit planning mistake.
