Almaty itineraries by trip length

Almaty is a city at the foot of a mountain range, and the range is the reason to come. Medeu and Shymbulak sit directly above town, while Big Almaty Lake and Charyn Canyon are day trips that need planning rather than a spontaneous taxi.
Which Almaty itinerary should you pick?
The 4 day route. It is the shortest plan that fits both Big Almaty Lake and Charyn Canyon, which are the two days most people come for.
Two days cover the city and the closest mountains and little else. Six is the number you want if the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes are also on the list, because those need an overnight rather than a day trip.

Why this page exists. Every RoamWeek page has to say something true of it and false of its siblings. For Almaty that is the question of how long to stay, which the duration pages below answer one length at a time.
