Almaty sits against the Tien Shan and the mountains are the reason to come, so three of these four days point at them. The thing to settle before you book anything is how you reach Big Almaty Lake, because you cannot simply take a taxi to it, and a great deal of what is still published says you can.
How many days do you need in Almaty?
4 days: 1 for the city, 1 for Medeu and Shymbulak, 1 for Big Almaty Lake and 1 for Charyn Canyon.
Travellers who went recently put the floor at 3 days if you are not hiking. Six is the number people give when they also want the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes, because those need an overnight rather than a day trip.
Can you take a taxi to Big Almaty Lake?
No. The upper road has been closed to private cars and taxis since 2019, which leaves 2 options: a tour that transfers you into a permitted vehicle, or walking up.
It reopened briefly in 2023 and shut again within months, which is why so much published advice still describes driving up. Walking is not a casual alternative either: from the car park it is a steep climb of roughly 5 to 7 hours there and back, so for most visitors the transfer is the realistic option.
When is Big Almaty Lake at its best?
In the 2 months of October and November, when the peaks already carry snow and the lake has not yet frozen.
In summer the water sits lower and the lake reads smaller in person than in photographs, which is the most common disappointment travellers report about it.
Is Charyn Canyon worth a whole day?
Yes, but budget about 4 hours of driving each way from Almaty and treat the walk into the Valley of Castles as the main event.
You leave the vehicle at the top and go down on foot or by shuttle. It is roughly 2 km down to the river, and the climb back out is the part people underestimate.

Day 1: Almaty on foot
Keep the first day low and in the city, so the next three days at altitude land on legs that have already arrived.

Morning
Green Bazaarabout an hour
The city's central market and the easiest first hour in Almaty. Go early, when it is trading rather than performing.
Panfilov Park and Ascension Cathedralabout an hour
The wooden cathedral is one of the few pre Soviet structures in the centre, and the park around it is where the city actually sits on a weekend.

Kok Tobeabout 2 hours
The hill above the city, reached by cable car. Worth it for the orientation more than the summit itself: you can see the whole grid and the wall of mountains behind it in one look.
Arbat pedestrian streetabout 90 minutes
The walking street in the centre, and the obvious place to eat before an early start. Almaty's food is one of the genuine surprises of the city.
Day 2: Medeu and Shymbulak
One valley, two stops, and the cable car does all of the climbing for you.

The high altitude skating rink in the gorge above the city, and the lower cable car station. Easy to reach by bus or taxi from the centre.

Shymbulakabout 3 hours
The ski resort above Medeu, and in summer the top of the cable car is a viewpoint rather than a ski area. Take the upper stage if the cloud is high.
Day 3: Big Almaty Lake
A full day out, about 10 hours door to door, and the lake is genuinely the whole of it.

Big Almaty Lakeabout 3 hours
A pale blue reservoir under snow covered peaks, inside Ile Alatau national park. Ordinary vehicles stop at the car park below and a permitted vehicle covers the last stretch of road. There is a trail along the shore, but the view from the upper road is already the view, so walking there is optional.
Afternoon
Ayusay valleyabout an hour
The waterfall here is small and the path to it is paved and short, about 20 minutes. Take it as something to do while you are already up the valley, not as a reason to come.
Birds of prey demonstrationabout an hour
A paid demonstration near the lake where herders show how golden eagles are kept and flown, usually around 10 US dollars. It is a staged attraction rather than a wild sighting, and worth knowing that before you arrive.
Day 4: Charyn Canyon
The longest drive of the trip, and the Valley of Castles is what you came for.

The drive eastabout 4 hours
About 4 hours from Almaty across open steppe, with nothing to suggest what is coming until the canyon opens below the road. Start early: this day does not work as a late one.
Afternoon
Valley of Castlesabout 3 hours
The best known section of the canyon and the only obvious marked trail in it. You walk down about 2 km through the rock formations to the Charyn river and back up again. Shuttle vehicles run the same route for anyone who would rather not climb out.

These are the two days where a booked driver is the practical answer rather than a convenience: the lake road is closed to taxis and Charyn is four hours away.

What is worth the time, and what is not
Worth your time
- Big Almaty Lake in October or November. The peaks carry snow while the lake is still liquid, which is the combination the photographs are selling and summer does not deliver.
- Walking down into the Valley of Castles. The 2 km descent to the river is the whole point of Charyn. The upper viewpoints on their own do not earn a four hour drive.
- A central base in Almaty. Three of these four days begin by driving out of the city, and Almaty traffic is bad enough that the address changes how early you have to leave.
Skip it
- Ayusay waterfall as a destination. It is a short paved walk to something small. Fine as a stop on the lake day, not worth a trip of its own.
- Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy crammed into one day. The cheap group trips that promise all three run 10 to 14 hours and most of that time is spent sitting in the vehicle.
- A hire car for the lake day. The road is closed to private vehicles, so the car stays parked in Almaty while you pay for it. Hire one for Charyn and the Kolsai lakes instead, where self driving genuinely is the better option.
Why this order
The sequence is about altitude and about traffic. The city day comes first because it is the only one that does not start with a drive, and it lets you arrive properly before three days spent well above the city. Medeu and Shymbulak come second because the cable car does the climbing and the day can be cut short if the weather turns. The lake and the canyon come last because both are long, both depend on transport booked in advance, and losing one of them to bad weather at the end of a trip costs less than losing it at the start with nothing to fall back on.
