Sri Lanka is a small island that people plan as though it were a large one. The distances look trivial on a map and then take four hours, because the roads wind and the buses stop. What actually decides the trip is two arrangements made before you land: whether you hire a car with a driver for the whole route, and whether you have a reserved seat on the hill country train. Neither can be fixed comfortably once you are there.
How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
10 days: 3 in the cultural triangle, 2 in Kandy and the hills, 2 at Ella and 3 on the south coast.
A week forces a choice between the hill country and the beaches, and most people who try both in seven days report the trip as a blur of transfers. Two weeks is what buys Jaffna, the east coast or a slower pace throughout.
How far ahead can you book the Kandy to Ella train?
30 days before the date of travel, and no earlier, on the Sri Lanka Railways reservation site.
The same site closes online sales 2 hours before departure and charges a 5 percent convenience fee. Every agent offering to secure a seat months in advance is selling you a promise the railway itself cannot keep.
Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes. An Electronic Travel Authorization is required before arrival for effectively all foreign nationals, though since 25 May 2026 nationals of 40 countries pay nothing for a 30 day tourist ETA.
Free does not mean optional, and this is the most common misreading of the change. The authorization still has to be applied for and issued before you fly, and it has to be used within 3 months of issue.
Is a car with a driver worth it in Sri Lanka?
For a 10 day loop, usually yes. The local convention is an all in day rate that already covers fuel, tolls and the driver's own meals and lodging.
Get the total, the daily rate and what it includes written down before departure. Travellers repeatedly report the price moving once the trip is under way, and the moment to settle that is at the start rather than on a roadside.

Day 1: Negombo, not Colombo
The airport is at Katunayake, next to Negombo, and about 35 km north of Colombo.

Negombo lagoon and beachthe rest of the day
A working fishing town rather than a resort. It exists on this itinerary because it is 15 minutes from the terminal and Colombo is an hour, and the first day of a long haul arrival is not the day to spend it in traffic.
Day 2: North to Dambulla
The transfer into the cultural triangle, with a cave temple at the end of it rather than a hotel.

Around 4 hours by road. This is the leg that tells you whether you want a driver for the rest of the trip.

Dambulla Cave Templeabout 2 hours
Five caves cut into a rock face, painted end to end. Shoes come off at the bottom of the steps and the stone gets genuinely hot, so late afternoon beats midday.
Day 3: Sigiriya at opening
A palace on top of a 200 metre rock, and the climb is the reason to be there at first light.

Early morning
Sigiriya Rockabout 3 hours
Go at opening. The staircases are exposed metal on the upper half and by mid morning they are both crowded and hot, which is a bad combination on a narrow one way route.
Afternoon
Pidurangala Rockabout 2 hours
The neighbouring rock, cheaper and rougher, and the only place you can photograph Sigiriya itself. A scramble rather than a staircase near the top.
Day 4: Kandy
South to the last kingdom, and the country's most important Buddhist site sits in the middle of it.

Dambulla to Kandyabout 2.5 hours
Around 2.5 hours south. The landscape starts climbing about halfway.

Time the visit to a puja, when the inner chamber is opened. Outside those windows you are looking at a closed door. Covered shoulders and knees, and shoes left at the gate.
Day 5: The train to Ella
Six or seven hours through tea country, and the single leg that has to be booked ahead.

Kandy to Ella by railabout 6 to 7 hours
Reserved classes sell out within minutes of the 30 day window opening. Unreserved carriages are always available and are standing room for much of the way, which some people prefer and most do not.
Ellathe evening
A small town that has become entirely about the people passing through it. Arrive in the evening and leave the walking for tomorrow.
Day 6: Ella on foot
Two short walks and a viaduct, all of them reachable without transport.

Little Adam's Peakabout 2 hours
A gentle hour up and the same back, through tea. Not to be confused with Adam's Peak, which is a different mountain, a night climb and several hours away.
Afternoon
Nine Arch Bridgeabout 2 hours
A stone viaduct in the jungle below the town, walkable from Ella in about 30 minutes. Trains cross a handful of times a day and the schedule is posted locally rather than reliably online.
Day 7: Down to the safari parks
Out of the hills, and the descent is the most dramatic driving of the trip.

Morning
Ella to Udawalaweabout 2.5 hours
Around 2.5 hours, dropping out of the tea onto the plain.
Afternoon
Udawalawe National Parkabout 4 hours
Reliable elephants in open country, and far less crowded than Yala. Yala has leopards and roughly triple the jeeps. Pick according to which of those two facts matters more to you.
Day 8: The south coast
West along the coast road to whichever bay suits the swell that week.

Udawalawe to Mirissa or Weligamaabout 2.5 hours
Around 2.5 hours. Weligama is the beginner surf bay, Mirissa the eating and boat one, and they are 15 minutes apart, so this is not a decision that has to be right.

The beach, deliberatelythe rest of the day
The plan has three days of early starts behind it at this point. This one exists so the last two are not endured.
Day 9: Galle Fort
A Dutch walled town on a headland, and the only place on the island that is walked rather than driven.

The ramparts are a complete circuit and take about an hour. Inside, the grid of streets is small enough to cover twice without noticing. Late afternoon on the west wall is when the town empties of day trippers.
Day 10: Back up the coast
Galle to the airport is about 3 hours on the expressway, which is the fastest road in the country.

The southern expressway makes this the one long transfer that behaves like the map says it should. Allow 3 hours and do not use the coast road unless you have a spare morning.

Colombo is the only realistic international gateway, and the airport sits an hour north of the city, which changes where a first night makes sense.

A jeep booked the night before beats one negotiated at a park gate at dawn, and it is the only part of this route where the difference is measured in hours of daylight.

What is worth the time, and what is not
Worth your time
- Setting a calendar reminder for the 30 day train window. Reserved seats on the Kandy to Ella service go within minutes of the window opening, and there is no second chance at them.
- Sigiriya at opening rather than mid morning. The upper staircases are narrow, exposed and one way, and by 9am they are both hot and queued.
- Pidurangala as well as Sigiriya. It is the only vantage point from which you can actually see the rock you climbed the day before.
- Agreeing the driver's total in writing on day one. Mid trip price changes are the single most repeated complaint in recent traveller reports, and the fix costs nothing at the start.
Skip it
- A night in Colombo at the start. The airport is 35 km north of it and next to Negombo, so a first night in the capital is two hours of traffic for nothing.
- Yala over Udawalawe on a short trip. Yala has the leopards and roughly three times the vehicles, and on a single half day the crowding usually wins.
- The coast road from Galle to the airport. The expressway does it in about 3 hours and the coast road does not, on a day when the flight will not wait.
Why this order
The cultural triangle comes first because it wants early starts and jet lag is briefly an advantage rather than a problem. Kandy sits between the triangle and the hills because it is on the way and because the train south starts there. The train is on day 5 rather than later so that a cancellation still leaves room to reach the coast by road. The safari day is placed on the descent rather than as a detour, since the parks sit between the hills and the sea anyway. And Galle is last because it is an hour closer to the airport than the surf bays are, which turns the final morning into a drive rather than a scramble.
