Slovenia is small enough that a week reaches everything most people come for, and it can be done without hiring a car. The trap is not distance, it is booking. Vintgar Gorge now sells a timed entry pass online only, and it cannot be bought at the visitor centre at all, so turning up is how people lose a morning.
Which Slovenia itinerary should you pick?
The 7 day route, which covers Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj and the Soca valley with 3 bases and no backtracking.
Five days works if you drop the Soca valley, which is the part that needs the most transport. Anything longer is better spent on the coast at Piran or over the border in Istria.
