Ecuador planning starts with a map most guides tiptoe around. The country's elevated risk zones sit on the coast, around Guayaquil and Esmeraldas, while the Andean spine that visitors actually come for, Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Banos, runs normally. So the honest route flies into Quito, works the volcanoes and crater lakes southward, and treats the coast as a different trip for a different year. Galapagos is real and wonderful and costs about as much as the rest of the trip combined, which deserves a plain sentence rather than a footnote.
