Ecuador planning starts with a map most guides tiptoe around. The country's elevated risk zones sit on the coast, around Guayaquil and Esmeraldas, while the Andean spine that visitors actually come for, Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Banos, runs normally. So the honest route flies into Quito, works the volcanoes and crater lakes southward, and treats the coast as a different trip for a different year. Galapagos is real and wonderful and costs about as much as the rest of the trip combined, which deserves a plain sentence rather than a footnote.
How many days do you need in Ecuador?
7 days: 3 days in and around Quito, 2 on the Cotopaxi paramo and 2 for Quilotoa and Banos.
Ten days lets Banos breathe and adds the Otavalo market north of the capital. Galapagos is its own 5 to 8 day trip with flights and park fees on top; bolting 3 days of it onto this route serves neither.
