3 Days in London
Westminster, the City and a museum day make a better first London trip than a list of Tube journeys between icons.

London's size makes bad planning look productive. This route cuts the crossings by giving Westminster, the City and the west central museums their own day, then uses the large free collections as genuine weather options.
Is three days enough for London?
3 days are enough for a first London visit when each day stays inside 1 connected area and includes no more than 1 major interior.
Greenwich, Kew and a full neighbourhood day outside the centre need more time. They do not belong as late additions to this route.
The plan at a glance
| Day | Area | What needs planning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Westminster and the South Bank | Westminster Abbey if going inside |
| 2 | The City and the river | Tower of London if entering |
| 3 | Bloomsbury and the West End | No fixed entry in this plan |
Day 1: Westminster and the South Bank
Walk the ceremonial centre in the morning, then cross the river once and follow the South Bank east.
- On foot
- About 7 km, almost entirely level
- Book before you go
- Westminster Abbey if going inside
Morning
Westminster Abbeyabout 2 hoursbook ahead
Choose the interior or a slower exterior walk through Parliament Square. Doing both the abbey and another large church is unnecessary today.
St James's Parkabout an hour
Use the park route toward the palace rather than treating the palace forecourt as an isolated stop.
Afternoon
South Bankabout 2 hours
Cross near Westminster and walk east with the river as a simple navigation line.
Tate Modernabout 90 minutes
Use the free collection as a weather shelter or a focused art visit, not an obligation to clear every gallery.
Day 2: The City and the river
Start at the Tower, cross to Borough Market for lunch and finish around St Paul's without reversing direction.
- On foot
- About 6 km with frequent stops
- Book before you go
- Tower of London if entering
Morning
Tower of Londonabout 3 hoursbook ahead
This is the day's one paid anchor. Arrive for the first part of the day if the Crown Jewels matter to you.
Tower Bridgeabout 45 minutes
Cross on foot and treat the bridge interior as optional. The exterior and river views already explain the structure.
Afternoon
Borough Marketabout an hour
Eat here, then continue west after the busiest lunch period rather than commuting to a second food destination.
St Paul's Cathedralabout 90 minutes
Finish on the north bank. Decide between the interior and the surrounding lanes based on energy and weather.
Day 3: Bloomsbury and the West End
Give the British Museum a defined collection, then spend the afternoon walking Soho and Covent Garden.
- On foot
- About 5 km, plus museum galleries
Morning
British Museumabout 3 hours
Admission to the permanent collection is free, but check whether a timed entry is recommended. Choose rooms before arrival.
Russell Squareabout 30 minutes
Take a short outdoor pause after the galleries before moving into the denser West End.
Afternoon and evening
Seven Dialsabout 90 minutes
Use the junction as the centre of a loose walk through Covent Garden rather than queuing for a checklist restaurant.
Sohoevening
End where food and theatre options are dense. Book a specific performance, not an entire evening timetable.
What is worth the time, and what is not
Worth your time
- One free national collection. It provides depth and a reliable bad weather option without consuming the attraction budget.
- Walking one river direction. The Thames connects sights more clearly than repeated short Tube rides.
Skip it
- Greenwich in this version. It deserves its own half day and weakens the compact three zone structure.
- Two paid interiors in one day. Queues and security make the timetable brittle.
Why this route works
The budget goes toward one chosen interior while free museums and public spaces carry the rest. Geographic grouping makes bad weather swaps possible without rebuilding the whole trip.

Why this page exists. London is the only plan in the set where world scale national museums can carry a rainy day without an admission charge.
