7 Days in Italy

Four Rome nights and three Florence nights make a stronger first week than a three city race through train stations.

Last updated . Opening days, entry rules, fares and road conditions can change. Recheck the official sources linked below before travel.

Seven days in Italy are not improved by proving that three cities fit on a timetable. Rome and Florence already fill the week, and one direct high speed train gives the route a clean midpoint without another hotel change.

How much of Italy fits into seven days?

7 days fit 2 Italian bases well, with 4 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Florence and 1 direct train transfer.

Venice is omitted on purpose. Add it when the trip reaches ten days or replace Florence rather than taking time from both cities.

The map shows one major intercity transfer and locally clustered days in Rome and Florence.

Day 1: Rome arrival and centro storico

Use the first afternoon for the Pantheon and nearby streets, with no timed museum dependent on the flight.

Afternoon and evening

  1. Pantheonabout an hour

Check current entry rules, but keep the surrounding walk flexible enough to survive a late arrival.

  2. Piazza Navonaevening

Finish nearby and make dinner part of the arrival day rather than another transport task.

Day 2: Vatican City

Give the Vatican Museums the morning, then stay west of the river for St Peter's and Prati.

Full day

  1. Vatican Museumsabout 3 hoursbook ahead

Book through the official site and choose a limited set of galleries before entering.

  2. Pratiafternoon and evening

Use the surrounding neighbourhood for a slower meal and evening after the long museum route.

Day 3: Colosseum and ancient Rome

Keep the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine together, then stop before archaeological attention runs out.

Full day

  1. Colosseumabout 90 minutesbook ahead

The timed entrance controls the morning, so verify the included access areas before buying.

  2. Roman Forumabout 3 hours

Continue directly into the archaeological landscape and select a few reference buildings.

Day 4: Rome to Florence

Take a direct morning train, leave luggage and give the afternoon to Florence's compact historic centre.

Transfer and afternoon

  1. Roma Terminimorningbook ahead

Arrive with margin for platform information and keep valuables controlled in the busy station.

  2. Piazza del Duomoafternoon

Use the cathedral exterior and surrounding streets as orientation rather than stacking a dome climb onto arrival day.

Day 5: Uffizi and the Arno

Anchor the day with an official Uffizi slot, then follow the river and cross once into Oltrarno.

Uffizi Galleries official ticket

Full day

  1. Uffizi Galleriesabout 3 hoursbook ahead

Choose rooms and artists in advance. The collection is too dense for an unfocused complete visit.

  2. Santo Spiritoafternoon and evening

Cross the river and let the piazza carry the slower end of the day.

Day 6: Markets and viewpoints

Use the morning for the market and smaller streets, then cross to a single sunset viewpoint.

On foot
About 7 km with a steep final climb

Full day

  1. Sant'Ambrogio Marketabout an hour

A working market gives the morning a local purpose beyond another museum queue.

  2. San Miniato al Montelate afternoon

Climb late enough for softer light and stay above the busier Piazzale Michelangelo terrace.

Day 7: Florence and departure

Keep the final morning flexible around luggage and the onward train or flight.

Morning

  1. Santa Maria Novellaabout 90 minutes

Choose the church or the surrounding streets based on the actual departure window.

  2. Firenze Santa Maria Novella stationdeparture

Return with enough margin to collect luggage and find the correct platform.

What is worth the time, and what is not

Worth your time

  • Two city bases. Both Rome and Florence receive complete days instead of arrival snapshots.
  • One direct train. The transfer is simple enough to preserve most of day four.

Skip it

  • Venice as a third base. Two additional hotel transitions weaken every city in a seven day week.
  • A museum every day. The collections blur together without street and neighbourhood time.

Why this route works

Rome and Florence are linked by frequent high speed service and contrast in scale. The route protects major official bookings while making the transfer day honestly lighter.

What we checked

Why this page exists. Italy is the only route here where fast rail makes a third famous city technically possible but still a poor use of a seven day trip.
